On the last expo day of ARMA 2010 in San Francisco we arrived at the Expo hall to find a long line of people at our booth waiting to speak with us immediately following the opening. Somewhat mystified at the suddeness of it all we asked a few people to how they had heard about us. Apparently Laurie Fischer of Fisher Associates LLC had just given a talk about the challenges of and steps to globalizing a domestic retention schedule. According to Laurie, one of the specific challenges without a good solution at the time was sourcing quality international research. During the Q&A session which was attended by some of our existing clients (thanks guys) they pointed the audience toward Fontis. We decided that it would be worthwhile to the RM community to reach out to Laurie and ask her to memorialize some of her thinking in a white paper. Clients frequently ask us about the best source for international legal research on records retention and data protection. More often than not, the question is immediately followed by "can't we just find it on the Internet?" If you haven't tried it yourself, the answer to the last question is sometimes, but not often enough to build an enterprise retention schedule.
Although we offer what we believe to be the best research product on the market in LDS, we cannot be all things to all people. Typical enterprise content management systems (ECM) have records management modules that progress content through a lifecycle until it is declared a formal record, at which time the system allows the application of a disposition rule derived from the user organizations formal retention policy.
